What’s your favorite?

Cover of Dead To The Max - Max Starr 1 - by New York Times Bestselling Author Jasmine Haynes

Writers have their favorites in their own work. Or maybe I’m just one of a kind! But no, we all do. Poll your favorite writers for what their favorites are! My favorite in my list is the Max Starr Series. And not for the usual reasons, like I loved the characters or the story or theme. I love this series because it wrote itself. It was like Max Starr was real, and I was just channeling her story. I dreamed full scenes at night. Oh, and I fell in love with the hunky detective Witt Long. And OMG, I fell in love with his mother, Ladybird Long, who’s introduced in Book 3. She is hilarious. Actually, she’s my mother! Who was also delightfully hilarious.

The idea was only supposed to be one book, Dead to the Max. And really, I’ll admit that the whole thing started because I had the absolute worst boss. Honestly, I think he was hooked on cocaine. The only way I could take my aggressions out on him was to make him a total asshole in a book. Then I was taking my lunchtime walk around the park near my office building, and the entire first scene came to me. Then Max Starr came to me. And she just wouldn’t let me go.

I won’t give you the blurb. I’ll just explain. Max has visions. She has visions of women being murdered, then she’s compelled to find out why and who did it or the visions won’t leave her alone. She also has a beloved husband Cameron, who happens to be a ghost. He, too, was murdered, and his murderers were never caught. So in Dead to the Max, Max has a vision of the death of Wendy. In order to solve her murder, Max takes her job as an accountant in a small business. And Wendy’s boss is a total ass (yes, my boss!). That’s when she meets the detective, who wonders why she’s so interested in the murder of a woman she didn’t even know. Like I said, I fell in love with Detective Witt Long. The man on the book covers is my vision of Witt. Even now, I get a little flushed thinking about a man who isn’t even real! But he was so real to me when I was writing. Yeah, I think I was channeling Max, because she was hot for him too.

Then this terrible man suddenly walked on stage. An evil man who was dogging Max. Bud Traynor. I shiver even now thinking about him. So does Max.

When I got to the end of Dead to the Max, I couldn’t let these people go. I wanted to know who killed Max’s husband. I wanted to know more about the evil Bud Traynor. And I wanted Max to fall in love with Witt. But really, how could she when she was still brokenhearted over Cameron? Then Max started having more visions of murdered women (in MY dreams, no less). And we just had to solve those murders too! So Max (and Witt and Cameron) compelled me to keep writing even after the book was finished.

And that is why the Max Starr Series is my favorite!

Dead to the Max is free (it’s always free, by the way). I hope you’ll try it, and even more, I hope you’ll love it and dive into the whole series!

Just for fun!

My neighbor recently invited me to visit the new kid goats at her farm. OMG, they were so cute! The little guy I’m holding is a week old. He loved chewing on my hair. The black and the white kids are only 5 days old. The little white one was born breach and they had to pull him out by his legs before he started breathing the mother’s amniotic fluid. Of the 11 kids born this season, the black one is the only doe. So adorable!
